Committees & Programs

Building & Grounds: Gary LaFemina*

Finance: Bob Douglas*

Parish Treasurer: Vince Contino

Stewardship: Bob Douglas*

Outreach and Mission: Sheila Noyes*

We focus on hands-on ministries of feeding the hungry and homeless. We work in a variety of ways with Family Promise – an outreach to homeless families with children. We respond to tornado and hurricane disasters with goods and money. We support the ministry of the Dominican Episcopal Church in several ways, particularly by supporting their work in Haiti, by providing a scholarship to Luis, a preschooler at Jesus Peregrino School in Barahona as well as financial support to Sami, a young girl in the DR born with AIDS and who is developmentally challenged. We do an occasional Ministry Fair to keep the congregation up to date on the church’s outreach efforts. Each year, there is a Mission & Outreach component to our Vacation Bible School in August – see the button on the Home Page. The Committee meets regularly to brainstorm opportunities for ministry.

Pastoral Care/Eucharistic Visitors: Deacon Marcia Tremmel, Bob Douglas*

Lay Eucharistic Visitors are parishioners who take the Eucharist to people who are home bound, ill, or recovering from surgery. This ministry allows parishioners who can no longer attend services to still feel like a vital part of the St. Mary Magdalene congregation.

Hospitality: Diane Geis*

We host receptions at the church for funeral and church activities.

The coffee hour ministry is an important part of our Sunday morning fellowship. This time provides opportunities to meet and welcome new folks and to socialize with old friends. Each Sunday after the 10:00AM service coffee, tea, lemonade, and baked goods are offered. It is the responsibility of at least two people to arrive early in order to prepare the drinks, set up the sweets, and clean up. New volunteers are assisted by an experienced server.

NMMT: Gary LaFemina*

The New Member Ministry Team is dedicated to proper follow up and follow through for guests and prospective members of St Mary. The team is broken into several subcommittees including: welcoming, hospitality, follow-up, publicity and administration. The NMMT goal is to ensure that each person/family that visits St. Mary has a great first impression of our Church; that they are provided with timely information about what makes our Church special. Including descriptions of the many opportunities for ministry and fellowship, programs and opportunities for the youth, as well as some information of what it means to be an Episcopalian.

The requirements to be part of this team are simple as a desire to welcome new people attending our church for the first time, following up with appropriate information, and/or delivering a symbolic loaf of bread to their homes.

This is a ministry for the young people of our church, who are in grades 5 through 12. The purpose of this ministry is to help and support our priest during the Eucharistic Service primarily on Sundays. Other occasions will include Christmas Eve and Holy Week Services.

Saint Mary Magdalene’s altar guild was started 10 years ago with the
beginning of our church. The principal function of the altar guild is to
dress the altar for Sunday Eucharist, as well as holy days, weddings,
and funerals.  Preparation time for dressing the altar and preparing the church
is about 30 minutes on a Saturday morning and 10- to 15 minutes between
services to redress the altar. The altar guild opens its arms to any
member in good standing of our church who would like to assist us. In the
past we have enjoyed the company of having a gentleman assist us; so
gentleman, please feel free to volunteer your services.. Training is done
on the second Saturday of each month. We would love to have you join us.
Please pray about becoming a part of our guild.

Each week, five people are needed for each Service; two readers, two Eucharistic ministers (Chalice Bearers), and a person to read the prayers of the people. They are scheduled according to their preferences for dates, and mailed the blank schedule to fill in the dates that they would like.

We have about 7 volunteers that do the arrangements for the altar on Sundays, Funerals, weddings and any other church activities.

We have  2 ushers at the 10:00  service. We have enough volunteers so that usually you only
usher every 4 weeks or so. More volunteers are always welcome.

At St. Mary Magdalene, in appreciation of the beautiful musical tradition we have inherited, we sing many parts of the service according to practices that have endured for centuries. Our choir anthems draw from traditional and contemporary sacred art music. Our willing congregation sings familiar hymns and repeats moving Taizé chants and recent praise songs at communion for a few weeks at a time. The choir schedule is not demanding, but we schedule an anthem and proper service music each week.

To be part of the choir, contact the music director with a willingness to attend Sunday and Holy day services, rehearse once a week Solo and small ensemble singing is often incorporated to round out the schedule and provide a nice mix.

Followship Programs: Lorette Hartzog* Ministries with Single Adults is a program patterned after Solo Flight, a program of the Episcopal Church USA. It seeks to provide opportunities for spiritual growth, learning, fellowship and networking with those who share similar values. It is open to all single adults and their single friends.

Big Kids Night Out is a group of adult church members, gathering for a night of fun, food, and fellowship - without the kids. BKNO is held once quarterly at a member's home and everyone brings a potluck dish to share. For more information, contact Elaine Douglas at 941 739-3734 or dougbebs@tampabay.rr.com

A social group where members take turns hosting dinners and meeting new friends. Participants will typically be “empty nesters.”

We meet every Thursday morning at the church. We work on our own projects, and one week a month we do a community quilt or a quilt for a shut in.

Do you knit or would you like to learn how?  Shawls, lap blankets or baby blankets are knit (or crocheted) with love and prayers to go to those who are in need orloving warmth or prayers, through iillness, grief, or any other condition.  The Prayer Shawl Ministry began in 1998 in Hartford, Connecticut and has spread across the world.  By the way it is not limited to women ... it is open to all. If interested let Donna know at moughty@mac.com or 909-2914

Women's Ministries: Diane Geis*

All women at St. Mary Magdalene are members of Episcopal Church Women (ECW). All are invited to participate in monthly meetings for food, fun, fellowship, service and spiritual growth. The gatherings provide opportunities to make new friends and build community within the church. ECW sponsors one major fund raising activity each year with the proceeds used for outreach and needs of the congregation.

We are a group of women that meet the 2nd Wednesday morning of every month at 10:30 in the church. We pledge ourselves to a life long program of prayer and service dedicated to the extension of Christ Kingdom and to the strengthening of the spiritual life of the parish.

The object of the Order of the Daughters of the King is the extension of Christ’s Kingdom through Prayer, Service, and Evangelism. An Order, not an “organization”, members follow a Rule of Life, which includes the Rule of Prayer and the Rule of Service. By wearing the DOK cross daily, Evangelism “just happens”.

Study is vital to all Daughters’ chapters so that members continue to grow in knowledge and faith; study is central to all chapter meetings. Meetings are held to suit members’ needs and schedules. Prayer is the foundation upon which Daughters respond to God in service to others. Daughters join in existing ministries (altar guild, choir, education) and find new ones. One of the major services is to assist the clergy in whatever way possible for the spiritual growth of the parish. Daughters do not raise money or sponsor any event in the name of the Order. Evangelism simply means to communicate Christ’s message and His Love in the power of His Holy Spirit, which Daughters do in numerous quiet ways.

There is a 12-week study program for women interested in DOK. Not until the ninth session does a woman make the commitment to become a Daughter. Everyone who comes to these sessions is given the opportunity to say “yes” or “no”. As this is a lifetime commitment, each woman should be ready to say her “yes” with conviction.

Upon completion of the study, there is a service of installation. Membership dues the first year are $50 which includes a silver cross. Membership dues including a pewter cross are $20. Thereafter annual dues are $35 which helps defray expenses at the diocesan, province, and national offices.
